79 Ways For Kids To Exercise - Indoors Or Out

    By Bev Grey

Does your child spend far too much of his or her free time watching TV or playing video games? Experts advise that two hours of TV or video games a day should be the limit to better assure kids will be healthy, strong and creative. Here is a quick reference list of some easy and fun exercise ideas to help children get active (often without even knowing they are exercising!):

    1. Walk your dog

    2. Walk your neighbor’s dog (with permission from your parents and your neighbor, of course)

    3. Fly a kite

    4. Toss a Frisbee

    5. Ask your parents or grandparents to take you to a state park or other area where you can take a nature hike. Look for unusual plants, insects or wildlife and take samples or pictures for your science class or show and tell

    6. Ride your bike

    7. Skate

    8. If you have a yard, pick up sticks or trash

    9. Pull weeds

    10.Rake the yard or garden

    11.Play tag 12.Play hopscotch

13.Have a hula hoop contest, and see who can keep the hoop up the longest

    14.Learn to juggle

15.Jump rope (boxers do it, and look how strong & healthy they are!)

16.Visit the zoo, amusement park or museum (lots of walking)

    17.Wash the car

18.Have every family member wear a pedometer, and have a daily challenge to see who can take the most steps. Losers do winner’s chores the next day!

    19.Shoot hoops

    20.Play soccer

    21.Play softball

    22.Play badminton

    23.Have a water balloon fight

24.Put on your bathing suit and run through the sprinkler

25.Go swimming (never without an adult to supervise!)

26.Give the dog a bath. The bigger the dog, the more exercise you'll get!

27.Sign up for a charity walk-a-thon with your parent, grandparent, or other relative. You’ll help raise money for a good cause and get in shape at the same time. If your town doesn’t have a walk-a-thon, start one for your favorite charity

    28.Do jumping jacks

    29.Do push-ups

30.Put on an exercise video and get a good workout

    31.Do sit-ups

32.Learn to play golf, or caddy for someone else

    33.Play tennis

    34.Play miniature golf

    35.Go bowling

    36.Learn to twirl a baton

37.Take a class in martial arts and learn to defend yourself

38.Build a fort and play cowboys and Indians

39.If you have a two-story home or a home with a basement, carry out-of-place items up or down stairs, one item at a time

    40.Run the vacuum

    41.Wash windows

    42.Clean your room

    43.Ride your skateboard

44.Learn yoga, either at a class or from a video

    ***WEIGHT-WISE KID SPOTLIGHT***

Kudos to 8.5-year old Riley Kern who not only ran in, but COMPLETED, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K - an annual 10,000 meter (6.2 mile) run sanctioned by USA Track and Field - held Saturday, April 1st in Richmond, Virginia.

Riley prepared for this race by getting up around 6:00 a.m. several times a week to run with his mother Kristen, who also ran in the race.  He started his training by running 1-mile and then adding on a half-mile each week, ultimately working his way up to 4.5 miles before the actual 6.2-mile event.

Riley ran the ENTIRE race in 1:06:37.  In addition to Riley placing 9th in his age group 9 and under, Riley also finished 7,751 overall out of the total of 20,119 race participantsWay to go Riley! Hats also off to mom Kristen for setting a good example for Riley and her other young son, Jake.

Incepted in 1999, the race has grown to be the fourth largest 10K in the country and the 22nd-largest race of any distance.

    ***WEIGHT OF THE WORLD***

    Operation: "Save Able"

Able Richardson, a 16-year old boy who lives in San Bernardino County, California, is in dire need of help.  At 6’2” tall, he currently weighs approximately 520 pounds – and that’s no typo! While Able is trying to lose weight on his own, it continues to be a struggle as the effort, as you can imagine, is nothing short of monumental. Simply put, Able needs an intervention before it’s quite literally too late.

Louie’s Kids (www.louiskids.org), a non-profit organization that offsets costs to help morbidly obese children get on a healthy track, is leading the charge to help Able.   Specifically, Louie’s Kids has set its sights on sending Able to The Academy of the Sierras (AOS), the boarding school component of Wellspring camps, for at least a year. This Academy is dedicated to helping teens who are struggling with a difficult weight condition, while also maintaining (and potentially improving) each child’s academic standing.

With Able’s circumstance being particularly dire, he needs a full year at the Academy to achieve the amount of weight-loss he requires.  The cost?  A full $31,000 (which reflects a reduced price offered by the Academy to help Able)!  Although Able’s health insurance actually covers extreme - and potentially life-threatening - Bariatric surgery (which he does not want), it will not cover a natural intervention such as AOS.  This is where YOU can make a difference.  If you would like to make a donation to help Able, you can do so at the Louie’s Kids Web donation page at: http://www.louieskids.org/donations.

    ***ESCHEWING THE FAT: FEATURE RECIPES***

For the lactose tolerant, here are a few healthy, dairy-intensive spring and summer snack ideas to keep kids cool as the mercury rises:

  • Fruit smoothies are a warm weather staple that can, and should, also be enjoyed year-round.  While fruit smoothie recipes abound, it need not be a complex process.  Simply blend, in amounts to your personal liking, either plain or flavored fat/sugar-free yogurt with skim milk, ice cubes, and either fresh or frozen fruit chunks. For added sweetness you can add a touch of honey or an artificial sweetener such as Splenda®. Blend and enjoy!

  • Healthy ice cream sandwiches are a snap - and always a crowd pleaser!  Purchase any type of round fat/sugar free cookie on the market (preferably the new whole grain varieties) or bake any low fat/calorie cookie recipe from scratch.  Sandwich waistline-friendly sherbet, sorbet or gelato between two cookies and press to make a sandwich.  For added excitement, flavor and visual interest, you can also roll the outside edge of the "sandwich"in chopped unsalted nuts, shredded coconut, raisins or finely diced fresh or dried fruit.

  • While the word "parfait" may not be in your child's vocabulary, (s)he will love making - and eating - this snack layered with goodness.  In a cup or bowl, simply create thin, alternating layers of non-fat yogurt, low-fat granola (or other heart-healthy cereal product), and fruit slices or whole berries. Make as many layers of each as you like, then dig in!

  • And, let's not forget how much colorful, jiggly Jell-O® can delight, especially when it is jam-packed with diced fruit.  And, in keeping with our dairy theme, don't forget to top with a dab of fat-free whipped topping!

  • Have a healthy recipe idea of your own to share with other Healthy Kids' Catalog subscribers? Do tell! Email us at press@healthykidscatalog.com

    Let Us Know!

    Just how "large"
    of
    a problem has

    childhood obesity
    become throughout
    the United States

Consider these startling facts detailing how overweight children often grow into overweight adults:

  • The probability of childhood obesity persisting into adulthood is estimated to increase from approximately 20% at 4 years of age to 80% by adolescence
    -- American Academy of Pediatrics

  • A child’s obesity will probably continue on through adulthood, contributing to limited athletic abilities and impaired-self esteem, as well as more health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even premature death
    -- National Institute of Health

  • Many adult diseases like cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, menstrual irregularity and depression are caused by an adult’s obesity, which probably was started in either childhood or adolescence
    -- American Academy of Pediatrics

  • Obesity is the leading modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is associated with the increase of type 2 diabetes among children
    -- American Diabetes Association

  • Over 60% of overweight children between 5 and 10 years of age are already at risk for cardiovascular disease
    -- American Academy of Pediatrics

  • The majority of the adult U.S. population, about 65%, is considered overweight or obese
    -- Centers for Disease Control

While it’s really no surprise, it’s

now been proven that mean children may be playing a role

    in the nation's burgeoning

epidemic of childhood obesity.  According to a new report

issued by University of Florida researchers in late April, bullying and taunting is partially to blame

    for overweight kids.  The UF

study revealed that “playground taunts may seem like harmless child's play, but bullying may

keep overweight children on the sidelines, making it more difficult

for them to shed pounds," and that "bullying also is linked to

    depression and loneliness.
